Even before the votes were in on Tuesday night from Arizona and Utah, Donald Trump and Ted Cruz were embroiled in a Twitter war that centered on their wives, as Trump threatened to “spill the beans” about Cruz’s wife, while Cruz labeled Trump a “coward.”
The dispute erupted over an online ad that was taken out by a Super PAC that supports Cruz, an ad that uses a photo of Trump’s wife – from a past photo shoot, where she isn’t wearing very much.
That internet ad evidently aggravated Trump, who went to Twitter and made what was basically a threat involving Cruz’s wife, Heidi.
The leader of the group “Make America Awesome” that ran the internet ad, sarcastically thanked Trump for giving it so much attention – and then accused the Trump campaign of pushing negative attacks on Heidi Cruz for some time.
As for the Texas Senator, knowing that the internet ad had come from an outside group – and not his campaign – Cruz went after Trump directly.
The back-and-forth over candidate wives was yet another strange twist in the GOP race, which will head into Easter with Trump in the lead, but still facing questions over whether he can close the deal on the Republican nomination.
Yes, Brian, this is unlike any race for President that I have ever covered.
