State Of The Union II

One thing that I thought about the other day was the “You lie!” outburst of Rep. Joe Wilson (R-SC) during the President’s health care speech last September.  Will Republicans be on their best behavior tonight, or will someone else seize the moment to castigate Mr. Obama?

It’s hard to imagine that someone is going to do that again tonight, but who knows what might happen since political passions are running high these days.

So what about the speech itself?  What should we expect?

Based on listening to this President enough over the last year, there will be the usual reciting of what this Administration has done on the economy and other issues.

Listen for what figure Mr. Obama uses on how many jobs were created/saved by the economic stimulus law.  The President used the number of two million when he spoke last Friday in Ohio.

That might draw some British Parliament-like jeers from the GOP side of the aisle.

What will the President say on health care?  Will it seem real, or just lip service?  And what will he say about the Massachusetts Senate race and how that impacts health care and the rest of his agenda?

Will Mr. Obama drop any big policy items on lawmakers or keep it pretty basic?

And afterwards, check out the GOP response.  Who can forget a year ago when Gov. Bobby Jindal of Louisiana made himself a household name (in the negative) with his post-Obama speech.  This year, the honor goes to the new GOP Governor of Virginia.

Prepare for spin on both sides.
